Rhinoceras Beetle

Habitat:
Rainforests. Costa Rica. Amazon Basin. Forested areas.

Diet:
Dead wood from trees, grasses, leaves, fungus, and fruits.

Enemies:
 Snakes and birds.

Facts:
Members of the subfamily Dynastinae are known as rhinoceros beetles (two species are pictured above).

They are very large beetles and can grow three inches or more in length.

The males have horns, the females do not.

Many species, such as Megasoma elephas, use their horns for fighting.

They are considered one of the strongest creatures anywhere. They can carry about 850 times their own weight.

Rhino beetles have very tough and hard outer shells. This gives them protection in battles with their enemies.

Because they are so big, they can store fat which gives them enough reserve energy to fly long distances without eating.
